Can you go dogsledding in the summer? Yes, as a matter of fact. Contrary to popular belief, Alaska can get quite warm in the summer months. Because of this, mushers and their sled dogs must find other ways to train than by sled and snow.
The most popular method of training in the summer is by 4-wheeler. The team pulls with very little to no assistance from the machine which helps them keep in shape until there is snow again.
At Gold Rush Dog Tours, we give a good taste of this experience with our specially designed carts. Our visitors actually help us keep the dogs in shape by riding in the cart. Even with a full cart, the musher must control the brake so the dogs don’t go too fast. They love to run! You can see a couple of pictures on musher Abbie West’s blog.
